Ekajati
Ekajati (also known as Blue Tara or Mahacina-tara) is one of the most fierce and powerful protective goddesses in Vajrayana and Tibetan Buddhism. She is the chief guardian of secret mantras, inner tantras, and Dzogchen teachings, known for fiercely protecting practitioners and destroying obstacles on their path to enlightenment.
Key Symbolic Features
Her distinct, wrathful iconography represents the ultimate, non-dual nature of primordial energy and emptiness.
One Braid of Hair (Ral Chig Ma): Symbolizes the unified, single nature of all phenomena and the ultimate truth.
One Eye: Represents the ability to see beyond duality and perceive the ultimate nature of reality.
One Tooth: Capable of subduing and "smashing" ego, negative karma, and all obstacles to spiritual practice.
One Breast: Symbolizes the swift bestowal of accomplishments and blessings to devoted practitioners.
Mythological Origins and Roles
Protector of Mantras: She aids disciples in understanding symbolic texts, decides the right time to reveal tantric teachings, and ensures the secrecy of empowerments.
Subduer of Demons: Tibetan legend holds that she was originally a Bon sky-goddess who challenged the tantric master Padmasambhava. He pierced her right eye, transforming her into a fierce defender of the Buddhist Dharma.
Leader of the Mamo: She leads the Mamo demonesses, a group of formidable female deities capable of governing worldly forces.
Primary Guardian: She is especially revered in the Nyingma school as a principal protector alongside Rahula and Dorje Legpa.
