Terton
In Tibetan Buddhism, a tertön (or treasure revealer) is a highly realized spiritual master who discovers ancient sacred texts, teachings, or relics known as terma (hidden treasures).
These masters are believed to be the reincarnations of the original disciples of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who, along with his consort Yeshe Tsogyal, hid these teachings throughout the Himalayas. They foresaw a time when specific spiritual guidance would be needed by future generations.
Key Aspects of the Tertön Tradition
The Treasures (Terma): These can be physical objects (like statues or scrolls), encoded symbolic scripts, or meditation practices that are directly awakened in the tertön's mind.
Earth vs. Mind Termas: Discoveries are classified as either Earth terma (physically uncovering hidden objects or scrolls) or Mind terma (recovering the teaching from the pure, awakened nature of the tertön's own enlightened mind).
Primary Lineage: While found in other traditions, the tertön and terma system is most prominent and richest in the Nyingma school (the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism).
Timely Revelation: Tertöns don't just "find" treasures randomly; they are said to reveal them at precisely the right moment and place when the teachings will be of maximum benefit to practitioners.
