The 4 Thoughts
The "Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind" (also known as the Four Reminders) are foundational contemplations in Tibetan Buddhism designed to shift your focus away from worldly distractions and toward spiritual awakening.
The four contemplations are:
Precious Human Birth: Reflecting on the rare opportunity of having a human life equipped with the physical and mental faculties to practice the Dharma and seek liberation.
Impermanence and Death: Contemplating the fragile, temporary nature of all things, including your own life. Recognizing that death is certain, but the time of death is unknown.
Karma (Cause and Effect): Understanding that every action has consequences. Positive actions lead to happiness, while negative actions lead to suffering, highlighting the need to abandon harmful deeds and cultivate virtue.
The Suffering of Samsara: Recognizing the inherent dissatisfaction and cyclic struggles of ordinary existence, which inspires a deep desire to break free from this cycle and attain enlightenment.
